The selection of the electricity wire of micro hydropower plant
Electricity line selection should be considered the micro water turbine manufacturer suggestion first. You can also buy it from from your local site as well.
Electricity is sent to home user by transmission line from your micro hydro power generator. Generally micro hydro generator power station should be closed to the user’s power facilities, so that transmission distance is short, and electricity pole can be erected with insulation lines for your micro hydro project, and line should be not less than 4 meters high off the ground. Indoor lines should be also insulated wire, wire line using copper or aluminum and fixed-line on the wall. For micro hydropower project, the cross section of copper insulated wire is not less than 1.5 square millimeter, aluminum core insulation wire is not less than 2.5 square millimeter, this is the minimum option, the final size of the line should be determined by project size and transmission distance.
- Transmission distance around 500 meters and no more than 1000 meters of micro hydropower station is commonly economic.
- more than 1000 meters, the transmission costs increase, the choice of electricity wire is according to the current value of your hydro generator, transmission distance and cross-sectional area of the wire. A simple calculation method to calculate your hydro generator current:
- Current = generator power/generator rated voltage, namely: I = P/V (single phase generator, for three phases generator, please communicate with us)
Example: there are 1000 w generator, rated voltage 220v. The current is 1000 w / 220 v = 4.54 A. According to the current to select the line cross section, every square millimeter copper wires allow security current is 5 A, every square millimeter aluminum wire allow security current is 3 A. If the electricity transmission is long of the micro hydro turbine station, the cost of the wire will increase dramatically. Because you should consider the electricity transmission loss, remote micro hydro generator users should consider improving voltage method for transmission; a high voltage transmission will be a choice.
If transmission is too long, a transformer will be your choice; above 10kw three-phase unit can choose 10kv transformer, which transmission distance within 15 km. of course we suggest to make micro hydro generator power plant not far than 3km, because the cost of wire will be high.
